Interview Question: Why Don't You Have a Degree?

post

I chose a non-traditional path and focused on gaining real-world experience. Over the years, I’ve built strong skills through hands-on work.

1. Acknowledge the Question Honestly

Be transparent, but avoid overexplaining or apologizing.

Example:
"That’s a great question. I chose a different path after high school and decided to focus on gaining real-world experience instead of pursuing a traditional degree."

2. Emphasize What You’ve Done Instead

Highlight your hands-on experience, skills, certifications, or independent learning.

Example:
"Over the past few years, I’ve worked in [industry/role], where I gained hands-on experience in [key skills]. I’ve also completed several professional courses and certifications, such as [example], to deepen my knowledge and stay competitive."

3. Focus on Your Results and Abilities

Employers care about what you can do, not just where you learned it.

Example:
"In my previous role, I helped increase team efficiency by 25% by implementing new workflows—something I learned through both on-the-job experience and self-study."

4. Reinforce Your Commitment to Growth

Show you're proactive and always learning—even without a formal degree.

Example:
"I’m a strong believer in continuous learning. I’m always looking for new ways to grow, whether through mentorship, online learning, or industry events."

Complete Sample Answer

"I don’t have a formal degree because I made the decision early on to focus on gaining real-world experience. Since then, I’ve worked in [your field] for over [X] years and built strong skills in [relevant skills]. I’ve also pursued professional development through courses and certifications in [specific area]. What I may lack in formal education, I make up for in hands-on experience, self-motivation, and a proven track record of delivering results."
