Develop and test computational and physics-based models relating to micro structural evolution of aluminum alloys and other metals, from casting through fabrication, including additive manufacturing.Develop and test models which connect micro structure to properties, for metals including aluminum, titanium, nickel-based and other alloy systems.Help drive the assembly of component models across different processing stages into one cohesive framework, leveraging advanced numerical toolkits to understand chained material and process models.Support efforts to include relevant data in the framework for doing material model predictions, including optimization of material properties.Provide critical assessment of experimental efforts, aimed at tuning models, and advancing the understanding of materials response.Leverage models, data, and numerical tools to provide predictions of commercial relevance, including new compositions, processing parameters, etc.Identify and submit new ideas for Intellectual Property that enables a sustainable competitive advantage for . 

 

Participate in alloy and/or process improvement projects aimed at reducing costs, improving recovery, adding revenue, etc. working with business units and other ATC divisions as appropriate.Present results of projects to peers and plant representatives, thorough use of internal reports and presentations, invention records, patent applications and external publications and presentations.Essential Knowledge & Skills / Education:Knowledge of phase transformations, phase equilibria and precipitation reactions in multi-component phase systems.Processing/microstructure/properties relationships in aluminum and/or other metal systems.Mathematical modeling capabilities, including development, debugging and integration of source code across multiple platforms.Ability to design R&D experiments, analyze data, and identify important variables and physically significant trends.Design and post processing of technically sophisticated characterization techniques, eg. SEM, EDS/WDS, EBSD etc.Strong interpersonal skills with team members and customers, both internal and external.- Ph.D. in Materials Science/Engineering, Metallurgy, Mechanical or Welding Engineering from accredited institution- Minimum 2 years experience with programming packages (Matlab required) and standard software applications, including Excel and statistical analysis packages (ie. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.- Experience with relevant metals, i.e. aluminum, titanium, and/or nickel-based alloys- Understanding of Additive Manufacturing, including multiple deposition processes and powder input- Familiarity with Thermo-Calc or other CALPHAD packages, including thermodynamic and kinetic aspects- Programming experience with the R language ; Experience with mixed language programming- Experience in performing microstructural characterization, including SEM, EDS, EBSD- Image Analysis, including batch processing and automatic feature segmentation- Use of Matlab MTEX
