OVERVIEW: The House 1St Mechanic will perform a wide variety of duties and tasks_ predominantly associated with the mechanical (millwright) discipline.

 

These duties and tasks include a multitude of maintenance interventions ranging from basic parts replacements to equipment refurbishment to optimizing equipment performance to advanced troubleshooting. Maintenance activities include, but are not limited to, inspection, (parts) replacements, alignment, balancing, installation, and refurbishment. 

 

The Mechanic is required to understand and maintain complex processing equipment including their operating principles. Individuals will be required to understand the operating principles of this equipment and its role in the process/factory. 

 

 Additionally, Mechanics are expected to understand equipment function and application to the extent that equipment performance can be optimized. Individuals will work closely with Production gaining a detailed understanding of operating parameters to ensure that Maintenance interventions are both appropriate and effective. 

 

The Mechanic coordinates with production supervision to execute Maintenance interventions on production equipment ensuring that equipment is properly configured and/or set up. 

 

Must have the ability to think in abstract terms, solve complex problems and apply troubleshooting skills. The Mechanic will be required to maintain mechanical power transmission equipment including drives and conveying equipment employed in a variety of factory specific applications. Fluid systems, including liquid, pneumatic, and hydraulic, will be maintained by the Mechanic. Fluid systems include pumps, valves, compressors, blowers, and fans. 

 

Fluid flow principles and requirements must be understood to troubleshoot system operation. The Mechanic will be required to perform a variety of joining and fabrication activities. To that extent, individuals will weld, cut, braze, and solder a variety of materials. This includes welding carbon steel using the SMAW and GMAW processes and welding stainless steel metals using the SMAW process.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

A. Candidate must, at a minimum, possess:_ _ i. 2-year technical degree (such as Industrial Technology, Manufacturing Technology, Mechanical Design, Machinist & Toolmaker, or related degree) OR must have fully completed a state-approved millwright apprenticeship AND a minimum of 2 years of full-time industrial millwright experience. Industrial millwright experience is defined in the "Minimum Qualification Essential Functions" section and includes installing, maintaining and repairing most types of industrial mechanical equipment; setting of many types of conveyors; laser coupling alignment; precision_ optical leveling and alignment; layout, fabrication and installation of production equipment; and welding. OR,

 ii. A High School degree or diploma although a GED certificate is acceptable and a minimum of 5 consecutive years of full-time industrial millwright experience. Industrial millwright experience is defined in the "Minimum Qualification Essential Functions" section and includes installing, maintaining and repairing most types of industrial mechanical equipment; setting of many types of conveyors; laser coupling alignment; precision optical leveling and alignment; layout, fabrication and installation of production equipment; and welding. OR,_ _ iii. Minimum of 2.5 years successful completion of the House 1st Class Mechanic Apprentice.

B. Candidates must not have been removed or demoted from a prior House 1st Mechanic classification within the last three (3) years._ _ C. Candidates will be required to take the following tests. The test scores will be considered along with skills and abilities to determine whether a candidate is the most qualified for the position._ _ D. Candidates will be required to submit to and successfully pass a Safety Screen that evaluates their ability to safely execute the duties and tasks defined for this position._ _ E. Possess tools as identified in the minimum tool list in Attachment I of this position description._ Candidates not meeting all the minimum qualifications for House 1st Mechanic, as outlined in this description, may be considered for a House 2nd classification but must meet all the qualifications for House 1st Mechanic 18 months of being awarded the House 2nd classification. Those who cannot meet the qualifications within this timeframe will be removed from the classification and placed in an opening for which they are qualified._ _ Minimum Qualification Essential Functions:_ _ A minimally qualified House 1st Mechanic must be experienced as required in bullet A of the Education and Experience section and able to immediately perform the following job functions with minimal to no instruction or supervision:_ _ A. Possess basic keyboarding skills and be able to navigate in a Windows Operating Environment._ B. Be competent in the use of a word processing software program._ C. Must be able to read and write in English._ D. Perform basic to advanced troubleshooting of equipment mechanical issues._ E. Interpret drawings, blueprints, and schematics._ F. Install and troubleshoot bearings, seals, and gaskets._ G. Install, maintain, repair, and troubleshoot equipment generally classified as mechanical power_ transmission including gearboxes/drives, transmissions, conveyors (belt, scroll, bucket), and rollers._ H. Install, troubleshoot, and align shafts and couplings (laser or dial alignment)._ I. Fabricate and install tubing and piping systems, including fittings, manufactured from various materials._ J. Install, maintain, rebuild, replace, and troubleshoot valves._ K. Install, maintain, rebuild, replace, and troubleshoot centrifugal or positive displacement pumps._ L. Maintain, repair, and replace fans and blowers including airlocks (rotary valves)._ M. Cut metals using plasma and/or oxyacetylene equipment._ N. Optimize mechanical equipment operation._ O. Understand and use precision measurement equipment._ _ Other Essential Functions:_ _ Although experience performing the following essential job functions is not required to be considered qualified for the job award, it is expected the House Mechanic 1st will satisfactorily perform the following tasks with minimal to no instruction or supervision:_ 1. Comply with federal, state, company, and factory safety requirements._ 

2. Comply with Good Manufacturing Practices, (GMPs)._ 3. Comply with company quality standards._ 4. Interpret and apply technical codes._ 5. Participate in the training of new hires and apprentices._ 6. Comply with and support the principles of Operational (Maintenance) Excellence._ 7. Use and safely operate hand and power tools._ 8. Perform rigging to move, locate, or relocate equipment using portable rigging and overhead cranes._ 9. Operate various pieces of mobile equipment including but not limited to fork trucks, manlifts, trucks, and skid steer loaders._ 10. Perform a variety of lubrication related functions including inspections, changes, lubricant application, and auto-lubricator maintenance._ 11. Perform routine equipment maintenance tasks._ 12. Communicate with appropriate personnel to optimize equipment performance._ 13. Perform basic planning and scheduling activities._ 14. Perform other duties as assigned._ 15. Must be able to work overtime as required._ 16. Describe the basic operating concepts and fundamentals of the major factory systems._ 17. Install and align trunnions for large rotating equipment (including requisite rigging)_ 18. Install, maintain, rebuild, replace, and troubleshoot mechanical seals._ 19. Maintain and troubleshoot pneumatic (vacuum) systems including air compressors and air handling units._ 20. Maintain and troubleshoot hydraulic systems._ 21. Maintain and repair fired heaters and boilers including coal-handling equipment, ash handling equipment, soot blowers, and vibrators.
